1982-01

Humble Wizard, 1982, as the visual world of The Perilous Engine begins to take shape.

A formal 1982 portrait establishing the band's new visual identity. Sebastian stands centrally in deep blue ceremonial stage clothing, with Rafe and Gideon flanking him and Dex seated among the percussion apparatus. Behind them, large brass-toned mechanical and astronomical structures hint at machinery that will become central to the album and tour.

The four members rehearse on an otherwise unfinished stage. Rafe uses the double-neck guitar associated with this period, Sebastian works at the microphone, Gideon holds the bass line, and Dex is surrounded by an expanded percussion system. Crew and unfinished mechanical structures are visible behind them.

A black-and-white dressing-room photograph taken after a performance. The band is sweaty, tired and still partly dressed in their stage clothing. Beer bottles, paper cups, towels, cigarettes, ashtrays, cables, cases, notes and percussion equipment clutter the room. Dex is animated in conversation while the others listen or decompress.

The machinery takes shape — late 1982. Humble Wizard and crew assemble the expanding Perilous Engine stage production before a performance.

The photograph captures the scale the band's production had reached by 1982. Crew members work across the stage assembling the circular mechanical structures and percussion apparatus while the band remains involved in the setup. A crew member crossing the frame is partially blurred by the slower exposure, giving the image the imperfect documentary quality typical of backstage 35mm photography.
