Biography

Dexter 'Dex' Mallory came to Humble Wizard from a background spanning both rock drumming and orchestral percussion. His command of odd meters, abrupt rhythmic changes, dynamics, timpani, and tuned percussion became increasingly important as Vale’s compositions expanded beyond conventional rock structures.

Mallory combines physical force with unusual precision. Despite the energy of his stage performance, his playing is highly controlled, enabling the band to perform complicated arrangements without losing rhythmic momentum. His percussion setup grew with the band’s ambitions to include a copper-finished drum kit, timpani, tubular bells, a railway brake drum, and the signature mountain gong that became his most recognizable stage instrument.

Energetic, quick-witted, and mischievous, Mallory is the least outwardly solemn member away from the stage. That levity sits alongside disciplined musicianship and an exacting concern for tempo and dynamics; when an arrangement or percussion idea begins to expand, he is usually inclined to propel it further.
