Gideon Cross

Biography

Gideon Cross came to Humble Wizard after years performing in British rhythm-and-blues, blues-rock, and heavy-rock groups. His education came from working bands rather than formal study, and he developed a style grounded in weight, timing, restraint, and rhythmic authority.

Cross provides the low foundation beneath Humble Wizard’s increasingly elaborate arrangements. His sound is large, controlled, powerful, and rhythmically precise; as the music became denser, he often responded by playing more economically, leaving room for Vale’s keyboards, Blackwood’s layered guitars, and Mallory’s percussion. He understands and maintains his own instruments and pedal rigs without sharing Blackwood’s preoccupation with rebuilding them.

Quiet, patient, observant, and dependable, Cross is economical with words but neither shy nor dour. In rehearsal he has a habit of reducing a complicated musical discussion to its essential rhythmic or structural problem.
