Rafe Blackwood

Biography

Rafe Blackwood grew up above a repair shop in Birmingham and learned amplification and electronics before receiving much formal musical instruction. By the mid-1970s he was repairing amplifiers, modifying pickups and guitars, experimenting with stage amplification, and beginning to construct or heavily customize instruments of his own.

That practical background became the basis of the metallic, orchestral guitar vocabulary he brought to Humble Wizard. Blackwood builds arrangements from restrained melodic passages, layered harmonies, large distorted sections, and multiple guitar voices. His solos are constructed deliberately and meticulously, leaving room for the small measure of spontaneity he calls “one dignified accident.”

Dry, practical, precise, and technically obsessive, Blackwood approaches sound with an engineer’s discipline. His heavily customized double-neck guitar reflects his continuing work with tunings, electronics, pickups, amplification, and stage equipment. He participates fully in the band’s ceremonial presentation while remaining firmly concerned with the practical machinery beneath it.
