Sebastian Vale

Biography

Sebastian Vale founded Humble Wizard in 1978 after a conservatory education and experience performing in chamber-rock ensembles. That formal background shaped the band’s approach from the beginning: Vale frequently treats songs as interconnected movements rather than conventional verse-and-chorus structures.

A baritone vocalist as well as a pianist and Mellotron player, Vale is the band’s principal composer and arranger. He tends to arrive at rehearsals with an underlying framework of extended structures, reprises, layered parts, and large dynamic changes; Blackwood, Cross, and Mallory then make substantial contributions as the complete arrangement takes shape. Vale remains drawn to the idea that a song should contain a moment in which the audience can no longer remember how it began.

Intelligent, articulate, and deliberate, Vale is intensely serious about music and structure without being tyrannical about either. He is commanding onstage behind his ornate staff microphone, but considerably warmer and less imposing away from the performance.
